Sonoma "rustic-sophisticate" style for home and gifts

The interior, overseen by Fernando, the beloved pet longhorn bull of the owner

You know you've arrived somewhere local and unique with your first step through the door of Harvest Home.  A short stroll from Sonoma's historic square, this warm space is dominated by the head of a huge spotted longhorn bull, Fernando; who the staff will happily explain was the owner's adored pet and died of old age. Once you have taken in this wonderful bit of local color, you will immediately find yourself drawn to the rich and varied displays of accessories, where you will discover that if your early impression from the bulls head and the paintings of horses leaning against the door was of of a western theme, that you were happily mistaken and, rather, you've found yourself in a space with a uniquely Sonoma county style; a magical mix of rustic, sophisticated and serendipitous.

Harvest Home is a charming treasure-trove of a store that invites you to browse and discover new delights in the fresh mix  and the ever-changing arrangements of interesting and unique designer accessories. From rustic aged metal, to tiny beaded birds or vintage postcards; there's a delightful feeling of having stumbled something special every time you visit. A target-rich environment overflowing with happy surprises, the displays manage to blend rustic with modern, simple with feminine in an appealing sightly over-packed way that makes every visit an adventure.

The warm and friendly staff are all experienced designers and  knowledgeable should you need help, but also relaxed and sensitive enough to let you enjoy browsing leisurely on you own undisturbed too. The items available range surprisingly affordable "impulse" accessories,  to serious upholstered and hard furniture items that can be custom ordered to fit perfectly in your space; at which point it's reassuring to know that the staff has the expertise required to guide you through the process smoothly and professionally.  The policy of the store is to source as locally as possible, so the vast majority of what's in the store is American-made, and much of it, such as the extensive selection fabrics for upholstery and window treatments, are from California sources.

The owner, Craig Miller,  was well ahead of the curve on creating furniture with recycled lumber, and still uses character-filled  re-purposed hundred year old lumber in some of the one-of-a-kind pieces in the store. These are the sorts of signature furnishings  that can give unique character and warmth to a home.    Miller has several decor-oriented shops though out the San Francisco Bay Area, each with it's own unique style and point of view.  You may also want to check out his newly opened  Fat Pilgrim, a new "contemporary general store," at 20820 Broadway (near Presentation School) in Sonoma, featuring, according to Linda Spring of SonomaMag.com, "an eclectic blend of products that range from specialty foods and beauty products, to toys for kids and unique gadgets and decor for the home."
