The Marin Cheese Company (actually officially in Sonoma county, straddling the Marin border) is the nations oldest cheese producer, founded in 1865, when founder Jefferson A. Thompson developed a breakfast cheese to feed the disillusioned miners pouring into the then Yerba Buena, now San Francisco, following the bust of the gold rush.

The scenic drive on the softly winding country road
leading from the small town charm of
Petaluma to the creative organic counter-culture of
Pt. Reyes and
West Marin, along with its
beautiful pond side picnic grounds set in 700 pastoral acres, make it a popular spot for locals and visitors
alike. This is the ideal rest stop for bike riders, for families with children that need to have a bit of time to stretch their legs, or for a couple wanting the classic romantic picnic experience, or for drivers wanting to pick up some picnic items at the deli on their way to further destinations.
Stop for creamy award -winning cheeses ( they gleefully beat the
French at their own game in 2010 with their Triple Cream Brie in the
world Cheese Awards!) and a loaf of crusty sourdough bread, local wines, or soft drinks and sandwiches from the deli counter, then enjoy the visiting geese while using one of the many picnic tables at the duck pond surrounded by rolling hills; or take full advantage and do the tour of the creamery and learn how the artisianal cheeses are produced and aged. BBQs are also available for rental, and group tours can be arranged (please call in advance).
